Editing Services

Not sure which type of editing service would best suit your work? Contact me to discuss your options.

Proofreading Services

$0.01/word

Proofreading involves meticulously scanning a manuscript for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting issues to ensure that it’s polished and error-free.

As the last step in the editing process, the goal of proofreading is to catch any remaining errors or oversights that may have slipped through during developmental, line, or copy editing.

Proofreading is only available to manuscripts that have been professionally edited and need a final once-over.

For a full-length novel, proofreading can take 2-3 weeks to complete.

Line Editing + Copy Editing

$0.02 – $0.04/word

Line editing addresses the stylistic aspects of writing (e.g., sentence structure, word choice, readability, consistency, and clarity), while copy editing focuses on the technical side (e.g., grammar, punctuation, spelling, and formatting, as well as fact-checking and reviewing citations when necessary).

With my combined line editing and copy editing service, I’ll clean up wordy sentences, rework awkward phrasing, improve pacing and transitions, remove redundancies, correct errors, and refine your manuscript to perfection.

For a full-length novel, line/copy editing can take 4-8 weeks to complete.

Developmental Editing

$0.03 – $0.05/word

Developmental editing, also called comprehensive editing, focuses on the big-picture elements of a manuscript like plot, character development, pacing, structure, dialogue, and writing style.

In addition to providing direct line editing and copy editing to your manuscript, I’ll deliver a detailed evaluation of the developmental aspects of your work, ensuring your manuscript is robust and well-crafted, avoids plot holes and under-developed characters, and effectively resonates with your intended audience.

For a full-length novel, developmental editing can take 4-8 weeks to complete.

Manuscript Critique

$0.005/word

From plot holes to character development, pacing to narrative structure, my manuscript critique provides in-depth feedback and actionable suggestions to strengthen your writing and help you realize your creative vision.

With a manuscript critique, you’ll get a detailed evaluation of your work that covers areas of strength and weakness, common errors and how to rectify them, guidance on rewriting/revising your manuscript, and tips to help you improve your writing.

This service does not include editing.

For a full-length novel, a manuscript critique can take 2-3 weeks to complete.

What Clients Say

“Kara was wonderful. As a first time writer, the process after the book is finished is daunting. What do I do next? Who do I turn to? Kara Bernard, that’s who. She read my manuscript with a truly professional eye and treated me as though I’d already published 10 books. Every e-mail was answered, even if it was just a quick hello. She is someone who cares about what you send her and wants to make you a better writer. She wants to see you succeed, not just offer a service. Thank you, Kara, for making this so comfortable and shining a light on the road ahead.”

— Dave T.

“Kara is a fantastic editor with an eye for detail and story structure. She was extremely thorough during developmental edits, giving positivity right along with more constructive criticisms to help guide me in improving my story, but also worked with me as I made changes to ensure we were both pleased with the final result. During line edits and proofing, she was just as thorough, and replied to all of my questions during the process. She’s also quick! I will definitely hire Kara again and would wholeheartedly recommend her for your editing needs.”
